Kenneth Branagh and Much Ado About Nothing essays Much Ado About Nothing is perhaps William Shakespeare's most depressing comedy. Although it is ultimately uplifting, throughout the play there are themes that are also prevalent in such devastating tragedies as Romeo and Juliet and Othello. Trickery, deceit, and death are woven throughout this smartly written comedy; these themes stray from the typical heartening tone used in the rest of his light comedies. Kenneth Branagh took advantage of his artistic license as a director, through integrating concepts of resolution and optimism throughout the movie. Without any physical theatrical elements, Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing is not an entirely lighthearted play. Branagh exercised his right as a creator when he diminished the heavier elements to appease his modern audience. In his film, Branagh softened Shakespeare's overtones of darkness by editing text and weakening the power of the antagonist, Don John. The antagonist of any story should be able to live up to his title – that is, he should be the catalyst for all major conflicts. In this case, the characters of Don John the Bastard and his followers – namely Conrade and Borachio, establish the unpleasant themes throughout Much Ado About Nothing, but not as thoroughly as the script suggests. Shakespeare's text provides all that is necessary to portray these characters as the miserable troublemakers they are, but Branagh's film does not delve into their complexities. In fact, the film ignored much of the evil from Don John and his crowd. Don John is not a man of many words, as he states in his introduction, so the few lines he does have become more important. Branagh chose to replace a large portion of the dialogue with action in the film. While this decision added dramatic effect and shortened lengthy scenes, it directly prevented further character development for the villains. Pi Day Activities for the Classroom

Pi Day Activities for the Classroom Everyone loves pie, but we also love Pi. Used to calculate the width of a circle, Pi is an infinitely-long number derived from complex mathematical computations. Most of us remember that Pi is close to 3.14, but many others pride themselves on remembering the first 39 digits, which is how many you need to properly calculate the spherical volume of the universe. The numbers rise to stardom seems to have come from its challenge to memorize those 39 digits, as well as the fact that is has what many of us can agree might be the best homonym, pie. Pi enthusiasts have come to embrace March 14 as Pi Day, 3.14, a unique holiday which has launched numerous educational (not to mention delicious) ways to celebrate. Some of math teachers at Milken Community Schools in Los Angeles helped me assemble a list of some of the most popular (and yummy) ways to celebrate Pi Day. Check out our list of ideas for Pi Day Activities for you to do at home or in the classroom. Pi Plates Memorizing 39 digits of Pi can be quite the challenge, and a great way to get students thinking about those numbers can be to use Pi Plates. Using paper plates, write one digit on each plate and pass them out to students. As a group, they can work together and try to get all the numbers into the right order. For younger students, teachers may wish to only use 10 digits of Pi to make the activity a little easier. Make sure you have some painter’s tape for adhering them to wall without damaging the paint, or you can line them up in the hallway. You can even turn this into a competition between classes or grades, by asking each teacher to time her students to see how long it takes for them to get all 39 digits in the right order. What does the winner get? A pie, of course. Pi-Loop Chains Pull out the arts and crafts supplies, because this activity requires scissors, tape or glue, and construction paper. Using a different color for each digit of Pi, students can create a paper chain to use to decorate the classroom. See how many digits your class can calculate! Pi Pie This may be one of the most beloved ways to celebrate Pi Day. Baking a pie and using the dough to spell out the 39 digits of Pi as part of the crust has quickly become a tradition at many schools. At Milken School, some of the Upper School math teachers definitely enjoy having students bring in pies to celebrate, also hosting a small party which might include some special logic puzzles to kick off the class. Pizza Pi Not everyone has a sweet tooth, so another yummy way to celebrate Pi Day is with a different type of pie, a pizza pie! If your classroom has a kitchen (or access to one) students can calculate Pi for all the circular ingredients, including the pizza dough, pepperonis, olives, and even the pizza pan itself. To top it off, students can write out the symbol for pie using their circular pizza toppings.   Pi Trivia or Scavenger Hunt Set up a trivia game that asks students to compete against each other to correctly answer questions about Pi mathematicians, the history of Pi, and the uses of the famous number in the world around them: nature, art, and even architecture. Younger students might engage in a similar activity that focuses on the history of Pi by taking part in a scavenger hunt around school to find clues to these same trivia questions. Pi Philanthropy Math classes might want to celebrate Pi Day with a more philanthropic approach. According to one teacher at Milken, there are several ideas that a classroom might consider. Baking Pi Pies and selling them at a bake sale to benefit a local charity, or donating Pi Pies to a local food bank or homeless shelter can be a sweet treat for those in need. Students can also hold a food drive challenge, aiming to gather 314 cans of food for each grade level. Bonus points if you can convince your teacher or principal to reward students for reaching that goal by agreeing to receive a whipped cream pie to the face! Simon Says Pi This is a great little game for learning and memorizing the various digits of Pi. You can do this one student at a time in front of the whole class or in groups as a way to challenge each other to remember the digits of Pi and see who gets the farthest. Whether you’re doing one student at a time or breaking off into pairs, the person acting as â€Å"Simon† in this activity will have the number printed out on a card in hand, to ensure that the correct digits are being repeated, and will read out the digits, starting with 3.14. The second player will repeat those digits. Each time â€Å"Simon† adds a number, the second player must remember and repeat all the digits that were read aloud to them. The back and forth play continues until the second player makes a mistake. See who can remember the most! As an added bonus, make this an annual activity and you can create a  special  Pi Hall of Fame to honor the student who remembers the most digits each year. One school in Elmira, New York, Notre Dame High School, reportedly had one student remember 401 digits! Incredible! Some schools even suggest having different levels to honor how far students can go when it comes to memorization, with named groups to honor students who can remember 10-25 numbers, 26-50 numbers, and over 50 numbers. But if your students are recalling over 400 digits, you may need more levels than just three! Pi Attire Don’t forget to get all decked out in your very best Pi attire. Pi-tire, if you will. Teachers have long amused their students with math-themed shirts, Pi ties, and more. Bonus points if the entire math department participates! Students can get into the mathematical magic and don their own Pi digits as part of their outfits. Math Names One teacher at Milken shared this Pi-tastic tid-bit with me: â€Å"My second child was born on Pi Day, and I made his middle name be Matthew (aka, MATHew).†

The Connections Between the Acts of Obsession, The Visual Outcomes and

The main focus of this essay is to explore the connections between the acts of obsession, the visual outcomes and the ideas behind it. The concepts and themes have been narrowed down into four groups for discussion. In the first group I examine two texts that deal with obsession as art, both texts include groups of artists working with obsession in their practice. The second group includes two examples of people dealing with OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). OCD is a behavior pattern that is not a choice. These examples I have found unveil two completely different people who share the same disorder and share with you the ways in which they cope and live their lives. Next I will discuss Colour and form with three texts that help inform the thinking and making of my art. Last but not least I have three texts that about collecting everyday objects. These texts can all relate to one another through common threads of collections though I felt it was necessary to group them into themes to best explain the relationships between theory and my practice. Scrutinizing I started my annotations journey by looking at a renowned group of 35 artists who share the same obsessive need to acquire items for art making. Lynne Perrelle’s book Art making, collecting and obsessions reveals an insight into the art practices of artists working with the same idea of obsession I have been interested in with my art. This book has been a good starting point for my thinking about connections between my work and other artists. Perrelle outlines each artists practice with how their obsession is made into art. This normally happens on undeveloped countries or no developed countries. In the developed counties there doesn’t happens this because there is no oppression so this never happens or start. Terrorism is affects nearly every undeveloped country in the world. We will discuss effects.One of the main effects is the killing of people th ey (the terrorist) always take prisoners because they know they can trade them for gold or , other thing they need or want, like to leave them alone, bring some transport (normally helicopters or an armored car so they can escape. Every time they don’t get what they want they start killing people. They just say like in 10 minutes if you don’t bring us what we want we will start killing people for every minute we want.So the police that is around normally gave them what they want the terrorist killing innocent people that was in the wrong place at the wrong moment. Also this makes a big effect in other countries around the country it happen. When a country has terrorism makes the country develops slowly because more presidents or important people are not thinking for improving the country just to solve the problem. The way for stopping terrorism or to try not to make people start it, is easy just don’t treat the employees like slaves.One of the ways of stopping t errorism is to try to give them what they need in terms of treatment. When the act of terrorism start the only way to stop it is to kill the terrorist because they will never want to give up, it’s a feeling that make them keep doing bad things. Conclusion: From my point of view, it is a bad issue but it can be stop or not started. It affects countries like Colombia, and it have come since all years. The terrorism happens in big scales and small scales. And is normally the same and created by the same reason.

Outsourcing is a business model in which one organization enters into a contract with another to manage and operate its business processes.   India has turned out to be one of the largest offshore outsourcing hubs for the IT sector and IT enabled services and processes.   About 44 % of all the outsourcing in the IT and the BPO industry is done to India.   There may be several reasons as to why India has turned out to be an IT hub (Schaaf, 2005 & Sharma, 2004).The human resources available in India are well trained, skilled, not very expensive to hire, and are basically English speaking.   The population of India is young and can be utilized in almost any field.   The human resources available in India (especially in the IT sector) have been high.   These resources are increasing in number tremendously and are becoming more and more available for the IT sector.   The cost of hiring human resources in India is much lower than several developed countries in which the MNCâ €™s originate.   Companies have to pay about 10 times more if they want to hire a professional in their home nation.   Hence, investing in India could be a huge benefit (Schaaf, 2005).India does belief in the social upliftment and offering policies that would help women to become more independent and free.   As the IT and the KPO industry is not labor oriented, it is officering a good opportunity for women to work.   Slowly the situation of women has improved in the country, and people would basically thank the booming outsourcing business (Burzi, 2005).   Personally I feel that women are more suited to do jobs in which meticulous concentration is required and the BPO industry is offering a huge opportunity for women.The Indian government has setup policies that do favor outsourcing and building the country into a global outsourcing hub.   India is very much interested in creating international relationships and establishing international business with several nation s in the world.   As the BPO industry is offering a huge benefit for the society and upliftment of the people, the government is continuously encouraging foreign companies to setup shop in India (Schaaf, 2005).India has been growing at a tremendous rate in the last ten years.   The growth annually has been about 6 %.   India may even be able to grow at a faster rate.   One of the mains causes for such a high growth rate is the booming outsourcing and the knowledge-processing units available in India.   India has been especially been open to the field of IT and software, and application of Information technology has expanded into various other sectors.   Effectively, many companies are having their back-end office in India, which offers back-end support (Schaaf, 2005).There may be a few issues that need to be considered for foreign companies whilst investing in India for outsourcing.   India has a large number of universities and a huge number of graduates are produced every year.   However, several of these universities may not meet international standards, and only about 10 to 20 % of those who graduate out every year are able to meet international standards.   The cost of hiring these individuals may become very difficult in the future due to a shortage of human resources.   Many people still consider the outsourcing business as unattractive and it may be difficult in certain instances to actually acquire the staff for such businesses.   Foreign companies may have to consider investing in the education system so that the quality of education is improved (Schaaf, 2005).India may be available to offer specialized services in certain fields.   However, in several other fields expertise may not be available.   The international investors who want to setup back-end support offices in India may not know this.   The investors have to conduct a detailed research so as to know the resources available and accordingly plan to utilize them, b efore actually investing (Schaaf, 2005).Another problem, which exists in India, is that it may be very costly to setup telecommunication links with the parent company in the US.   If due to some reason this telecommunication links are lost, life may be virtually be shut down completely in another part of the world.   Outsourcing businesses are usually conducted in developed cities of India, and several far-flung areas are unable to offer any support to the BPO’s.   Land is very costly such places, and companies would have to pay a huge price to actually setup infrastructure (Burzi, 2005).It may be very difficult for Indian professionals to work as per the convenience of US or European timings.   Many firms, which have been outsourcing their business processes to India, need to take several issues into considerations before actually conducting work.   They would have to take care of the conveyance and security of the employees (especially females) before having them work as per the US and European timings.   Socially, an Indian woman may not like to venture out of her home at night and work during night shifts.   This may be one of the major issues.   However, several of the MNC’s have guaranteed proper security, conveyance and flexible work timings to ensure that they have the staff to work according to the US and European timings.Hence, although India does offer a huge amount of opportunities for foreign investors, several issues need to be taken into consideration before actually investing.   It may actually be a challenge, but finally if these issues are sorted out, the When men and women are treated differently, it is unethic al, especially when they perform the same tasks, which require the application of the same skills, knowledge and experience.   Although equal treatment of employees is one of the major requirements of the U.S. Constitution and many statutes, the area of gender equality is still vague. According to researchers, â€Å"organizational culture is characterized by its particular narrative structure of gender citizenship and by the voices and silences that confront each other over gender inequalities†(Gherardi, 2006, p. 180).   Thesis statement: Gender inequality in the workplace is an ethically significant issue which requires adequate solutions because it leads to unethical discrimination of women. As a rule, women’s discrimination influences their motivation, leads to poor interpersonal relations and inadequate corporate culture.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   To start with, gender inequality in the workplace is ethically significant because it influences women’s motivation to perform their tasks in a proper way. Many studies point out to the fact that â€Å"gender inequality is embedded in the workplace† (Smith, 2014, p. 53). For example, women’s experiences regarding gender inequality in the working environment are based on lower job security, lower wages compared to men, lack of respect, lack of benefits or inadequate benefits, and â€Å"vulnerability to sexual harassment and abuse† (Smith, 2014, p. 53). As a result, women have poor motivation to perform their duties. They have no interest to develop new ideas and use their creativity in decision making process. In other words, women have negative attitudes toward unethical gender discrimination in the workplace.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Moreover, gender inequality is an important ethical issue because it affects interpersonal relations to a great extent.   If women are treated inequality, they often have poor interpersonal relation s with other employees (both men and women). Many men consider that women should not be in the leadership position. This assumption is wrong because many women demonstrate their best skills, knowledge and experience, which can be used in leadership roles (Aaltio Mills, 2003).   Undoubtedly, if women realize that their abilities are ignored, they do not want to develop effective interpersonal relations in the workplace. According to researchers, women who are continually discriminate i n the workplace demonstrate no interest in promoting corporate culture. Actually, any male-dominated corporate culture is ineffective in today’s business environment because international business encourages gender equality, without differential rules for men and women (Smith, 2014; Aaltio Mills, 2003). According to researchers, â€Å"we do not need to face gender empowerment ourselves to be able to understand gender inequality issues, but we need intelligence to describe and essentialize cultural processes that outline gendered organizational reality† (Aaltio Mills, 2003, p. 15). Corporate culture should reflect the organization’s policy regarding women’s rights.Conclusion Thus, it is necessary to conclude that the issue of gender inequality in the workplace is ethically significant because it refers to gender ethics. There are three major reasons that show that the issue of gender equality in the workplace is ethically significant. If women are not motivated to perform their tasks, they act unethically. Second, gender inequality is an important ethical issue because it affects interpersonal relations in the workplace to a great extent.   Third, the issue of gender inequality in the workplace is an ethically significant issue because it affects the effectiveness of the company’s corporate culture.
