Over the past couple of months, there has been debate over the Caitlyn Jenner story, a media icon that has recently transitioned from being male to female. Although she is, in fact, the most famous trans person of our time, the media’s portrayal of her as a naturally glamorous trans woman, distorts the image of what it actually is like to be transgender. The trans community have expressed their opinion on the topic stating Jenner is not an accurate example of the lifestyle experienced by most trans women. The National LGBTQ Task Force states that transgender people are twice as likely to be unemployed and four times more likely to live in poverty compared to the general population and even more so for trans women of colour. While†¦show more content†¦Not every woman, trans or not, has access to the kind of plastic surgery procedures or glamorous lifestyle afforded Jenner. The term â€Å"the personal is political† was an important argument used by the second w ave feminists in the late 1960s. It was brought to attention that although our personal lives have a historical and cultural location, they also have a political dimension and are gendered. Most people would consider transitioning from a male to a female as a very personal decision. However in the case of Caitlyn Jenner that was entirely to the contrary, her high profile and wealth have created political impact and her image creates an unrealistic and, for most people, unattainable image of what it means to be transgender or even female. Her status in the media has deflected our attention from the alarming amount of discrimination the trans community and women face regularly. Lee describes â€Å"the personal is political,† as â€Å"...gender plays a role at every level of expectation, action and conflict...If gender influences the formation of ideas...to our concepts of the real, the rational, the ethical, and the beautiful, then it cannot fail to be central to the ways in w hich those ideas have informed our present attitudes and values.† (p. 6) How we understand institutions like the military, families and the economy is shaped by our values, privilege and gender. High School Students Were Attending The End Of Summer Parties

Steubenville, Ohio, August 11, 2012. High school students were attending the end of summer parties after a triumphant Big Red scrimmage game. The fun results in Ma’lik Richmond age 16 and Trent Mays age 17, two star football players, being charged with rape. Three parties were attended that night by four football players, two of which were Mays and Richmond, along with a 16-year-old female, Jane Doe, who was acquainted with Mays. The first party was given by another 16-year-old girl whose parents were not home, with an estimated 50 or more teens in attendance, but when her older brother arrived, he broke up the party. According to witnesses, Jane Doe appeared to be intoxicated when she left. She had been drinking a large blend of liquors. The second party was held by a member of the football team and his mother eventually made anyone who was not spending the night leave. During this time, Jane Doe was seen vomiting several times. The third party, 10-15 minutes away, was also held by a team member. In route to the third party, witnesses say that Jane Doe who was not responsive was being recorded by cellphone as her breasts were exposed and she was digitally penetrated by Mays. SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) was a bill proposed in the House of Representatives that aimed to tackle the growing problem of online piracy and copyright infringement. It targets foreign-based websites that contain any form of unauthorized copyright-infringing material such as movies or music by giving content-creators the right to stop any US businesses from providing payment services, advertising, or even dealing with prosecuted websites; essentially blacklisting and hiding these websites to any US visitors. The bill is split into two main sections: â€Å"Combating Online Piracy†, which provides tools for rights holders to protect their content, and â€Å"Additional Enhancements to Combat Intellectual Property Theft.†, which criminal law which as applies to intellectual property rights and increases punishments for leaking government information. Adventures Of Huck Finn And Town Life Essay In Mark Twains novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn he talks about small town life in Southern Mississippi. He portrays it as gossipy, a place where everyone knows everyone and knows everyone elses business and doesnt care to tell it. It is confining to Huck and Jim because there is too much conforming to society. This is why they escape on the raft. In Chapter 18 when Huck goes into town dressed as a girl to get information he talks to a woman who has only lived there two weeks. She is able to tell him everything that is going on despite this. This shows how in small towns people arent afraid to talk. Not only did the woman freely give all the information to someone she didnt know, someone had to tell her all about it in a two week tome span. Twain is depicting small towns in a gossipy manner, where no one has discretion. Twain is also characterizing small towns as confining with a lot of conformation to society. When Huck goes to live with the Widow Douglas and Miss Watson, they try to turn him into someone hes not. They dress him up in fancy clothes, try to teach him religion and try to take away all of his individuality. They do this because this is what the society in their small town accepts, and they dont want him to be different than anyone else, because how would that make them look. Huck however, escapes their attempts to sivilize him by running away. Twain shows that he has some contempt for small town life and its behaviors. Miss Watson is one of the main people to show this because of her trying to change Huck. Twain attempts to demonstrate this by portraying small town life and gossipy and confining. His dislike is seen especially through Huck who escapes the conformity to live his own life.
